This workshop centres two ideas from Mills’ famed appendix to The Sociological Imagination, ‘On Intellectual Craftsmanship’. One, that this imagination ‘is often successfully invited by putting together hitherto isolated items, by finding unsuspected connexions’; and two, that ‘scholarship is a choice of how to live as well as a choice of career’.

We will collage concepts, deconstruct and reconstitute ideas, and make metaphors of knowledge to reflect on sociological thought as an endeavour that requires the cultivation of scholarly community.
